If you’re a parent, you know how important it is to get the perfect family portrait. Whether you’re printing out some holiday cards or having them blown up as large wall art, a great photo will make your home feel warm and inviting—and it’s also an incredible way to document your family’s history.
But where are you supposed to take these photos?
A lot of people assume that the best place for a family photo is indoors, in front of a fireplace or in front of an open window with natural light streaming through it—and while there’s nothing wrong with this idea (it’s actually how most people take their family portraits), there are other options that can give even more dimension and depth to your photos.
One of our favorite places to shoot outdoor sessions is during golden hour—the hour before sunset or after sunrise. The light has just enough warmth left in it from the sun that it gives everything a beautiful glow without being too harsh on faces or skin tones. It also creates beautiful shadows that add depth and character to your subjects’ faces and bodies, which is especially important if you’re shooting kids who will be wearing any kind of outfit for their photo shoot.
